Golden Gate

The Golden Gate
This is what use to be the main entrance to “Yaroslav's city.” Above the arch rose the cross of the Blagoveshenskiy Church with it's gold plated dome. It was to symbolize the Golden Gates of Constantinople and Jerusalem. The gate was gradually destroyed during the long years of descrution and decay following Batu's conquest. In 1982 a full size mock-up of the gate was constructed. The original ruins are hidden within the new structure. Outside the Gate in 1997 an old work by Ivan Kavaleridze (a sculptor) depicting Prince Yaroslav the Wise sitting with a model of St. Sophia in his hand was reproduced on a very large scale.
